There is currently a crisis in the NHS. For over a decade we have had the ongoing problem that the eldest in our communities have been stuck in hospital – medically fit to be discharged, but unable to go home because they needed care and support at home, and this couldn’t be arranged quickly enough.
These patients were unfairly labelled as ‘bed blockers’ but it was through no fault of their own. However, there is a solution, and my colleagues and I at Caring Together Charity are part of that solution.
As a Senior Care Assistant or ‘Rapid Responder’ I bridge the gap between hospital and the delayed care at home. As a charity, we provide temporary care for the patient when they come home, until the hospital can provide a more long-term solution.
So, if you sometimes find yourself shouting at the news when the presenter talks about the crisis in the NHS (I know I have!) then come and join us and help to sort out the problem.
I have worked for Caring Together Charity for over nine years and have been a Rapid Responder for over two years. I have the privilege of helping patients and their families at a time of real need. I also earn an extremely competitive salary. But that’s not all! In my job I have been given the opportunity to learn how to write a care plan. At first, I found the prospect very daunting, but I soon learned and found it rewarding. I also work on call providing emergency cover to look after someone’s loved ones when they are unable to do so.
I am salaried, so I don’t have to worry that I may not have enough hours. I love the work that I do and the interesting people I get to meet. As a Senior Care Assistant, you may be called out in the night to camp out in someone’s house if you are on-call, but you are paid to extra to do so.
If you are already a carer for another company, there’s some good news. All care calls at Caring Together Charity are at least an hour long, so you don’t have to rush. You get paid to travel and you get paid mileage.
