Reflexology self-careLearn how to give yourself a five-minute hand massage

Thankfully, it’s easy to learn hand reflexology techniques for a massage you can easily do yourself.

Learn how to relieve tension and take a mental break from your day-to-day.

Always speak to your GP if you have any concerns before trying reflexology.

1. Start by warming up your hands first by rubbing them together as if it was a cold day outside and you were not wearing any gloves – count to twenty whilst you are doing this and then add a few drops of your favourite hand lotion to soften your hands and make massaging them easier.

2. Start on your right hand and rub the heels of your hand with your left thumb in gentle circular motions.

3. Then using your left thumb massage up and down and along the muscle where you thumb meets the rest of your hand on the fleshy part. This area does a lot of hard stretching, so give it a break and feel it relax.

4. Now using the same technique as you used on the heel of your hand with gentle circular motions rub the palm of your hand up to the base of all your fingers, where they bend.

5. Then working on the back of your hand, use an upward circular motion and massage from the base of your hand to the bottom of the finger joints.

6. Then very gently use your left hand to pull on each finger. This stretches the muscle and relives joint pain.

8. Then turn over your wrist as if you were taking your pulse. With your left hand around your wrist, move all your digits in a soft circular motion.

Repeat the above on your left hand.

Reflexology for children of various ages

Reflexology can be beneficial for children of various ages. Here are some insights:

Young children and babies

  • Gentle and non-invasive: Reflexology is particularly helpful for young children and babies because it involves gentle pressure on specific points on their hands and feet. It’s a non-invasive approach that doesn’t cause discomfort.
  • Calming and nurturing: Reflexology provides a safe and enjoyable way to calm and nurture babies. It can boost their immune system and promote overall wellbeing.
  • Relief from ailments: Regular reflexology sessions can bring relief from common childhood ailments.

Older children and teens

  • Positive response: Children often respond extremely well to reflexology. They are usually more open and responsive than adults.
  • Stress reduction: Unlike adults, children don’t carry years of accumulated stress. Even just a few reflexology sessions can be beneficial for them.

How reflexology works

  • Reflexology focuses on the whole body, with specific reflex points targeted based on emotions and their impact on the body.
  • Positive touch during reflexology stimulates the release of oxytocin (the “happy hormone”), encouraging relaxation.
  • Regular treatments can help children feel calmer, improve sleep, and enhance their overall frame of mind.

Self-care techniques

  • Reflexology sessions also teach children self-care techniques that they can use on their own hands. These practical strategies can empower them to manage stress and relaxation anywhere, anytime.
