Congratulations to Martham Academy and Nursery for once again receiving our Carer Friendly Tick Award – Education. The award is in recognition of their work to identify and support young carers within their school.
Deborah Gillespie, deputy head at Martham Academy and Nursery, said the school was very proud of their young carers and added, “Our young carers show strength and resilience in their day-to-day uncertainties. They are given plenty of opportunities to share their role with others which has developed a greater awareness in our school community.
“Parents and siblings have forged friendships and support from each other following our events and get togethers this year.”
Claire Rogers, carer awareness and voice coordinator at Caring Together said, ‘It’s great to hear that the school has adopted a whole family approach to supporting their young carers, and that they continue to improve support for them within the school setting. A massive well done!’
A panel of carers assessed the submission from the school. They were particularly impressed by the school;
- having two staff members who are young carer champions. They organise activities and support the young carers on a regular basis.
- displaying young carers information in an eye-catching and prominent position within the school
- getting the young carers parents and siblings involved in young carer activities and support.
The Carer Friendly Tick Award was originally developed for education by young carers from Caring Together’s Norfolk Young Carers Forum (NYCF) project. The success of this meant the awards have been rolled out across Norfolk, Peterborough and Cambridgeshire and now includes community, health and employer organisations. The awards recognise the important role organisations must play in ensuring carers of all ages are recognised and given the support they need.
