Congratulations to the Swan Youth Project in Downham Market on receiving our Carer Friendly Tick Award – Communities. The award is in recognition of their work to identify and support young carers within the project.
Lucy Kenna, assistant family and youth worker at Swan Youth Project said, “It is really important to us to be able to have this award, as it not only recognises the support we offer to young carers, but it allows anyone who is referred in our direction the confidence that we are able to provide the right support for them.”
Claire Rogers, carer awareness and voice coordinator at Caring Together said, “It’s great to see that the Swan Youth Project continue to work hard to support young within their setting. They are also great at linking up with other local organisations, so well done to everyone involved.”
A panel of carers assessed the submission from the school. They were particularly impressed how the youth project has been identifying and supporting young carers through having:
- Lucy, who has a wealth of experience, as their named member of staff responsible for supporting young carers
- a young carers agreement which includes the range of support the youth project can offer young carers
- partnership working with West Norfolk Carers
- been raising awareness of young carers on their social media pages.
The Carer Friendly Tick Award was originally developed for education by young carers from Caring Together’s Norfolk Young Carers Forum (NYCF) project. The success of this meant the awards have been rolled out across Norfolk, Peterborough and Cambridgeshire and now includes community, health and employer organisations. The awards recognise the important role organisations must play in ensuring carers of all ages are recognised and given the support they need.
